First up were a band who seemed to be highly influenced by Nick Cave/The Birthday Party. 15 minutes after they had finished, Women & Children came onto the smokey stage. June (I don't know who is who out of the other members) sat at the piano on the left of the stage and explained that although they were billed as a "French band" only one of the members is French, one Canadian, and two from the United States. The other members took up drums, guitar and bass. The crowd in front of the stage remained sitting on the floor but attentive, and the band started playing "Magic Lantern" and then "Today To Die". Then they all swapped instruments to play the next song. The music got a very good reception. There was even more instrument swapping to come, including one song which utilised the piano and a keyboard, another with tamborine, and even one with a small toy mouth keyboard (I'm sure they have a proper name, but I don't know it). Everyone took a turn on the drums. Most of the music was very relaxed and serene, but sometimes developed into more dynamic grooves. A friend remarked that of the four band members, one looked like Dee Dee Ramone (even though he was wearing sunglasses with huge white rims), one like Kurt Cobain and one like Marty McFly from the "Back To the Future" movies. After about 40 minutes they finished their set and left the stage to good applause. Cat power was next, and had quite a job to better Women & Children.
