Reviews Updated 15/01/2006 Les Inrocks Jean-Daniel Beauvallet, 11th of January 2006 In French with an English translation below "Crise du disque, quelle crise du disque ?", semblent s¹amuser les Women & Children, en sortant cet objet somptueux : un coffret comme en offraient il y a vingt ans des labels hardis comme Factory Records ou L¹Invitation au Suicide, avec deux vinyles 25cm et un DVD dans une boîte en carton fort, dorée en parfait artisanatŠ Réfugiée à Paris, cette fanfare franco-canado-américaine s¹est forgée, à force de concerts et de disques distribués à la main, une solide réputation dans le petit monde du folk dérangé, comptant aujourd¹hui Cat Power, Vincent Gallo ou Devendra Banhart dans son fan-club. Mais loin des concours hippies actuellement en vogue dans le folk, c¹est vers un psychédélisme patraque, touffu et confus que lorgnent ces chansons qui ont appris leur grammaire hérissée dans les tréfonds de San Francisco (de Mazzy Star aux torch-songs d¹American Music Club) et leur chant sépulcral chez Nico. Women & Childen, avec des merveilles comme Wave & a Smile ou Lovesladies Island NJ, dessinent les contours d¹une musique bucolique et pourtant angoissée, aux airs apaisés mais à l¹âme tourmentée. Elégantes sans coquetterie, luxuriantes sans superflu, ces chansons se révèlent moins abstraites et nébuleuses qu¹elles ne le semblaient au départ, imposant une humeur, des textures et une personnalité complexes, une présence théâtrale mais jamais grandiloquente. Un western gothique captivant même quand il n¹est que nature morte ­ bande-son possible au Gerry de Van Sant. "Are you in hell?", tonne le groupe, dans un déluge d¹électricité ­ et rarement chansons inconfortables sont apparues aussi suaves, profondeurs infernales aussi hospitalières. Sheltered in Paris, this french/canadian/american fanfare has built with concerts and hand distributed records, a solid reputation in the deranged folk world, having Cat Power, Vincent Gallo or Devendra Banhart in its fan-club. But far from the hippie concourse in fashion those days, it is towards a unhealthy, bushy and chaotic psychedelism that those songs aim for, having learnt their bristly grammar in the depht of San Francisco (from Mazzy star to the American Music Club torch-songs) and their sepulchral singing with Nico. Women and Children, with wonders like Wave & a Smile or Loveladies Island NJ, draw the outlines of a bucolic music that is however anguished as well, an unwound appearance but with a tormented soul. Elegant without coquetry, lush without superfluity, these songs become less abstract and astral than they seemed at the begining, imposing a mood, complex textures and personality, a theatrical presence that is never grandious.
